THE FAMOUS FA CUP AT LIMESIDE SCHOOL
THE dream of football-mad youngsters in Limeside came true as they got up close to the real FA Cup.
They laid eyes on the impressive gleaming trophy when Bernard Halford, life president of Manchester City FC, paid a visit to the Holy Family School.
Born in Chadderton, Bernard became the country’s youngest club secretary when he joined Oldham Athletic at the age of 23.
Becoming club secretary at Manchester City he has since gone on to fulfil 40 years with the club and is now life president.
Having visited the local primary school last year, he decided to return with a treat for the children.
Surrounded by guards, the cup was put on display at the school for all the children to marvel at and have their photos taken with.
Learning mentor Maria Grimshaw said: “The children were just in awe of the cup when they clocked eyes on it.
“It will be a fantastic experience for them to take with them and remember for the rest of their lives.
“The blanket they put it on is one I knitted for my grandson who isn’t due to be born until March — that’ll be a bit of history for him. Bernard is an absolute gentleman and it was a pleasure to have him at the school.”
