POLICE gathered as the incident moved to open land
RESIDENTS in Grains Road, Delph were evacuated last night after an armed robbery in the village.
Homes were emptied as a precaution after locals reported a strong smell of chemicals.
It came after a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbing the Co-Op pharmacy.
Police were called to the chemist in the high street where it is believed there was a stand-off at around 3.35pm.
A police helicopter was seen circling the scene and officers arrived to find drugs had been stolen. Inquiries are continuing.
It is believed there was a stand-off in the chemist, which then moved to a nearby field. Armed officers were seen gathering between Holland Close and Pringle Mill, shortly after the incident.
Police could not confirm there had been a stand-off, but it is thought shots may have been fired.
Those evacuated were let back in their homes last night. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
