TRAGIC: paramedics arrive on the scene
A WOMAN has died and her husband remains in a critical condition following a horrific accident in Shaw yesterday.
The couple had been holding hands as they crossed Crompton Way, at its junction with Milnrow Road — a notorious accident blackspot — at 3.05pm when they were hit by a blue Toyota Yaris.
The couple were taken to hospital with head injuries. Police confirmed this morning that the woman (60) had died.
Her husband (65) remains in a critical condition and was transferred to Salford Royal, formerly Hope Hospital. An elderly woman driver was put in a neck brace and on to a stretcher.
The car had a broken windscreen and damaged bonnet. The road was scattered with possessions belonging to the couple.
Crompton Way was closed and the traffic was slow in both directions at the Rochdale Road junction for several hours following the incident. Witnesses should call 0161-856 8473.
Accidents on Crompton Way, as well as concerns about drivers not being able to see properly, have prompted junction improvements.
In 2010, Oldham Council completed improvements on Crompton Way between Linney Lane and Rochdale Road.
These included replacing pedestrian guard rails, resurfacing work and new road markings, as well as replacement crash barriers.
