BAGS are packed: Denis and Beryl Kershaw ready to leave their long-time home
AN ELDERLY couple facing eviction have found a roof over their heads with only days to spare.
Denis and Beryl Kershaw are heartbroken at leaving their long-time marital home — a property Derek has lived in for 66 years.
The Chronicle reported last month how the pair were ordered to leave their home by January 17.
After a short extension on the deadline they will move into a First Choice Homes property in Watersheddings tomorrow.
The pensioners sold their property in Sunfield Avenue, in Moorside to a private landlord after financial woes, three years ago. They claim they have been “unfairly treated” by Tameside firm TE Lettings.
The business however won a court battle over the possession of the house.
Beryl (66), who became a full-time carer to Denis (67) after he suffered heart problems in 2002, said at their long-time home: “We don’t want to leave here, but we are going to have to the make the best of what’s happened.
“At least we are not far away from our friends — but God knows what would have happened to us if we could not have found somewhere.
“The new place was only finalised recently. It has been a real upheaval and last minute, but we have had help from friends and Oldham councillor Adrian Alexander.”
Mike Hanley, owner of TE Lettings told the Chronicle last month he offered the couple other properties — which they turned down, and the Moorside property had to be sold as the loan to purchase the home was being called in by the banks.
