OLDHAM Athletic could play host to some of the biggest names in British music this summer.

Stadium-filling superstars such as former Oasis star Noel Gallagher, classical temptress Katherine Jenkins or rocker Rod Stewart could potentially stage a mega pop concert at Boundary Park.

Latics have been offered 15 potential acts — which include boy band favourites McFly and The Wanted — by an interested production company. The club is also exploring the possibility of a concert by Sir Elton John.

Oldham’s commercial boss Jenny Warburton called the chance an “unbelievable opportunity”.

She explained: “We may not have the best facilities in the country but the production company came to the ground and seemed excited at the concept.

“We have only three stands and they think that’s great because the stage can go in the gap.

“Towards the end of May or June we are looking at, as it’s out of season and we would not want to ruin the pitch — but we still are a long, long way off.”

A Facebook poll has been launched asking fans who they would like to appear at the 106-year-old venue and currently Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is an overwhelming favourite.

The agents of the most popular acts will be contacted to see if their stars would be interested — but the whole potential event will still need the green light from Oldham Council.
