Foodbank mission goes down well
Date published: 06 February 2012
Organisers of the first borough-wide foodbank have received an overwhelming response from volunteers wanting to help, and are to hold a meeting inviting more willing donators to come along.
The scheme, which launches next month, is still in desperate need of a base from which to hand out the much-needed food parcels, but organisers are concentrating on rallying the troops for the mission ahead.
Rev David Hawthorne, of St Margaret’s and St Chad’s Church, Hollinwood, is organising the scheme in response to the alarming amount of people who are in crisis — victims of the economic crash.
He said: “Rather than homeless people or drug addicts, some of these are people in work. There are others who have been made redundant, who have few savings.
“Some have hit short-term problems.”
The Reverend has asked people to consider helping deliver the aid to family homes, or to simply donate a can of food every week. Those who receive aid, which will be in the form of three days worth of non-perishable food items, will have had to have been referred from an agency, social services, a GP or a charity.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday at 7pm, in the Canon George Hall, Chapel Road, Hollinwood.
