Shear relief for net hair-raisers!
Date published: 06 February 2012
Sara Duncan (44) had been diagnosed with the illness last September but wanted to help six-year-old daughter Lola cope with her fight for survival.
So Sara agreed to have a video made of Lola snipping off the locks of her bobbed brown hair instead — to show “how mummy will look” after chemotherapy treatment.
The emotive video was initially filmed and edited by Lola’s dad, Craig (40) as an intimate family memento.
But the Oldham couple’s family and friends were so moved by the three-minute film that the couple decided to use it to raise money and awareness for cancer charities. Now the video has become an internet hit after being posted to video-sharing site YouTube.
The family are hoping to raise £100,000 for 10 different cancer charities.
Sara, who works as a breast-feeding support worker at Tameside Hospital, said: “We were both laughing. We made it into a happy, giggly positive thing.
“After it had finished it was sheer relief — and all my friends said really positive things, giving me confidence.”
Craig said: “We were trying to help Lola understand what it all means. At first it was difficult for her to watch the video without getting upset but she now knows it’s for a good cause.”
Sara was diagnosed with breast cancer on September 29. The couple have six children between them.
Craig (40) said: “The natural reaction is to burst into tears but having got over the initial shock you’ve got to focus and be positive. Sara has smiled her way through it all and the biggest thing that’s kept her going are the children.
Sara had a mastectomy and partial mastectomy in October, followed by chemotherapy.. She is currently half way through chemotherapy treatment and due to undergo three weeks of daily radiotherapy, followed by five years of hormone treatment.
