TWO teenagers arrested on suspicion of Nellie Geraghty’s murder have been eliminated from police investigations.
The pair, aged 14 and 17, will face no further action and their bail has been cancelled.
The 79-year-old great-grandma died from head injuries suffered during an attack near her Shaw home on Thursday, November 24, last year.
Police swiftly arrested the pair, who were subsequently bailed. However the latest decision has been made after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.
Det Insp Aaron Duggan said: “I want to stress that both young men fully assisted with our investigation, were very co-operative and we are satisfied they had no involvement in Nellie’s death.”
A 37-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder remains on police bail. Police have now sworn that they will continue their investigation with vigour. Det Insp Duggan added: “Nellie’s family deserve the truth about what happened that day, and we will not stop until we can give them those answers. I would continue to appeal to anyone who has information about Nellie’s death to come forward.”
Despite a number of inquiries the ashes of Nellie’s husband Frank, that were in the handbag snatched during the attack, have still not been recovered.
A £5,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction or recovery of the handbag has been offered by a member of the public
Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555 111.
