Heat is on over slow radiators

Rooms fail to warm up quick enough
NEW heating systems fitted into Housing 21 properties are not coming up to scratch.

They are failing to bring rooms to the required temperature quickly enough and could see contractors removing up to 1,500 radiators to fit larger or more efficient units.

Up to 16 housing schemes for older people — including Aster House in Aster Street, Coldhurst — could be affected.

Housing 21 has been assessing the situation and as yet, is unable to confirm exact numbers.

Les Clarke, director of services for Housing 21, added: “We’re currently working with our delivery partners to assess the heating in some of our schemes and why they are not reaching temperature within the specified 45-minute timeframe.

“We’re confident we’ll resolve any problems identified by the assessment.

“A replacement schedule will be put in place, if necessary, with minimum disruption to the residents.

“It’s important to emphasise that each property has a fully-functional heating system. It’s the time it takes to get up to temperature which we’re assessing. We are working with our residents to ensure they are supported and answering any queries they may have.”

One resident, who did not wish to be named said: “Does Housing 21 not believe the tenants have put up with enough? I cannot believe they are about to let my mother and hundreds of other elderly tenants be put through more disruption.”

Housing 21 insists that part of its commitment is to ensure homes are heated to an adequate temperature, especially in periods of cold weather.

Jane Hinde, regional services director for Housing 21 said: “The wellbeing of the residents is our prime concern and our aim is to keep any inconvenience to a minimum.”

She added that any work needed would be agreed in advance with residents and work would be completed on the same day.
