Women, 19, abused shopkeeper

TWO Lees teenagers have been given suspended custodial sentences after being caught abusing a shop worker on CCTV.
Daniella Boyle had tried to buy two bottles of wine at the Red Rose Food and Wine store in Oldham.
But the 19 year old, from Fern Hill, became aggressive when she was challenged on her age and, along with co-defendant Jade Shearer (19), also of Fern Hill, started abusing the shopworker.
Prosecutor Jackie Stott, told Oldham magistrates both women were heard racially abusing the man and seen spitting at him on CCTV footage. The court heard how Boyle raised the two bottles above her head before hitting the victim in the stomach with one of them. The victim had been trying to usher Shearer out of the shop. The pair pushed over a display and knocked items off the counter before leaving.
They returned five minutes later and Boyle took the wine — leaving a handprint at the scene.
Mrs Stott said: “Both were threatening and abusive towards the complainant. Boyle told him she would just take the wine if he wouldn’t serve them.”
Boyle said in a police interview she didn’t feel she was racist because she “chilled with Asians”.
Miss Deanne McGinty, defending, said both women had handed themselves in and would accept their punishment.
Magistrates told the women their offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence was appropriate. Shearer was given six weeks in a young offenders’ institution, suspended for 12 months, plus a supervision order and 100 hours of unpaid work.
For the racial element, Boyle was given a 10-week sentence, suspended under the same terms.
The offenders must each pay £5 for the stolen wine and £135 in compensation and costs.
