College’s ‘Oscar’ triumph

OLDHAM College students have triumphed at an Oscar-style ceremony for young film-makers in the North-West.
They beat hundreds of entries from schools and colleges to emulate the success of “The Artist” in Hollywood.
The silent film led the way at the Academy Awards while Oldham College picked up the top prize at the Underexposed Film Festival for “Chain of Events”.
The short film explores gang culture and discrimination and includes original music composed by the students. It was made in collaboration with production company Baker Media, which supported the students as they developed their skills.
Underexposed is UK’s largest festival for student film-makers. The ceremony was held at the Cornerhouse in Manchester.
“Chain of Events” actors David and Tom Sixsmith were presented with the award on behalf of the college by documentary maker Chris Salt.
John Eccles, the college’s digital production manager, said: “To be shortlisted from the hundreds of entries is an achievement in itself, but to be chosen for best film from a group of industry peers and young people is incredible.” The film can be seen on Youtube.
