A MAN is in hospital after being struck by a police vehicle outside an Oldham pub.
The 53-year-old diabetic sufferer was in collision with the car in Hollins Road, near the Famous King George.
There were reports he was “pushed” into the road, and a 26-year-old man remains in police custody for questioning after being arrested on suspicion of assault, relating to the incident on Sunday evening.
But eyewitnesses said the man had suffered a hypoglycaemic fit as he walked out of the pub and “stumbled” into the road.
The man landed face down in the road and was run over by the police response car immediately after, it is claimed.
A young woman said: “There was nothing the driver could have done. It would have been impossible for the police car to stop in time. It was a total accident. The driver was distraught when he realised what had happened.”
It is understood the injured local man had been in the pub drinking coke and coffee as he watched the Tottenham vs Manchester United match.
A taxi was ordered for him after he fell asleep at the table, believed to be linked to diabetes.
A witness said that he “lost his footing” outside the pub when a number of people tried to help him.
One local said: “The car was on top of the man and it took six men to lift the car off him.”
Paramedics were immediately called to the scene at 6.20pm to find the man conscious and talking.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the response vehicle was involved in the collision.
A police spokesman said: “The man suffered a broken ankle and facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. He remains in a stable condition.”
