A WOMAN who fought a two-and-a-half year battle against cervical cancer is urging Oldhames to turn out in force in support of cancer charity Macmillan

Nicola Craffey says she couldn’t have got through her illness without the support of her Macmillan nurses.

The disease left the 31-year-old, of Turf Lane, Heyside, with a legacy of chronic fatigue and lymphodoema, which causes swelling and pain in her leg. Despite her problems, she is in remission and in good spirits, determined to help the charity that helps her.

Her latest effort is a Starlight Supper which takes place on Saturday, at the Moss Inn, Heyside.

Nicola explained: “Two Macmillan nurses look after me. They give me a great deal of support and they are more like friends than anything. People with cancer wouldn’t be able to rehabilitate and get better without their support. I am raising money to give something back because of what they have given to me.”

Nicola underwent radical hysterectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy following her diagnosis in 2008, told her story through the Chronicle over the last 18 months to urge women to take advantage of cervical screening to avoid the nation’s second-greatest cancer in women aged 35 and under.

Tickets for Saturday’s event (from 7pm), cost £5 on the door.
