Arson attack hits fire training

OLDHAM’S fire chief has hit out at youngsters who have hampered the vital training of local firefighters.
Fire crews from Hollins discovered a training vehicle ablaze in their yard when they returned from installing fire alarms, at around 7.30pm, on Sunday, February 26.
Kev Talbot, the borough manager for the fire service in Oldham, is angered the incident has caused a setback in training firefighters.
He said: “The old cars that we keep at the back of our stations are not toys for children to play with and on set fire for their amusement.
“They are there for our firefighters to practise the kind of rescue skills that keep this borough safe day after day.
“Now this car, which was paid for by a service that is facing huge budget cuts, cannot be used and that limits the opportunities for firefighters to take part in realistic training.”
The wrecked Fiat Cinquecento was one of two vehicles due to be used in assessments last week in the Clough Gate yard.
