Community dig set to unlock buried secrets

CHADDERTON will be part of one of the UK’s biggest community archaeological projects.
A two-week dig on the site of the former Chadderton Hall will delve into a site that once housed everything from a manor house and pickle factory to a menagerie with a lion and a boxing kangaroo.
The site is one of 11 in a five-year Dig Greater Manchester project supervised by the University of Salford.
Pupils from 10 schools, as well as members of the public, will be able to get involved in the Chadderton dig from September 10-22.
Chadderton Historical Society has played a major role in bringing the Big Dig to town.
Other sites considered in Oldham were the Daisy Nook engine house and the Daisy Nook water houses.
Society secretary Michael Lawson said: “We are really thrilled. It is going to be really interesting to see what they turn up.”
