Sykes hits out at ‘horrible’ bridge

FORMER council leader Howard Sykes wants transport bosses to do remedial works on Shaw’s “horrible” Jubilee Bridge.
He hit out at work being undertaken in Milnrow Road close to the Jubilee bends for the Metrolink extension to Newhey. The bridge parapet profile, colour and height fail to match existing stonework.
“My colleagues and I are doing everything we can to get the message across to all concerned about how angry the people of Shaw are about the Jubilee Bridge parapet replacements, ” he said.
Transport chiefs say the shape of the parapet used over a live line is laid down by law and the profile and height are in line with regulations. The transport authority doesn’t require formal planning approval.
A TfGM spokeswoman said: “Changes to the height of the parapet and the new coping stones were necessary. The colour of the new coping stones will weather over time to match older stonework.”
