Keep on running: Muriel Brown (81) will show the young ones how it‘s done
IF anyone is going to inspire the crowds it is great-grandma Muriel Brown, who will carry the torch at the ripe age of 81.
As the Chronicle revealed in December, the fitness fanatic from Uppermill was told on her birthday she had been selected and has recently found out her stretch will be through Kexbrough, near Barnsley, on Monday, June 25.
Muriel started running when she joined the East Cheshire Harriers in 1948, went on to tackle 10k races and completed three marathons in her 50s.
She said: “I am very excited and I’m beginning to realise what it involves. I’m still a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing. This really is a one-off, it’s never going to happen again.
Her experience will be a world away from the 1948 Olympic Games, which she still remembers.
“Now it’s such a big deal, and such a celebration. I’ve been doing secret training ready for the day.”
