Awards take pride of place

TWO accolades have taken pride of place in the civic silverware cabinet to showcase Oldham’s dedication to supporting military servicemen.
The Jack White VC Cup has been awarded to the Oldham Royal British Legion for the first time in the award’s 68-year history. It was granted to the borough branch for its work including support for service personnel both past and present.
The trophy will sit alongside the Norman Webster Shield — or Poppy Shield — in the cabinet after the branch raised £62,000 with the poppy appeal in one year, the highest figure in Greater Manchester.
The trophies and other civic silverware can be seen at the civic centre.
::Jack White won the Victoria Cross for bravery in the First World War, when he was 20 and a private in the 6th Battalion, The King's Own Regiment.
