Oldham schools shine in region’s winter games

OLDHAM youngsters earned medals as they impressed in the Greater Manchester School Games on Tuesday.
The sweat paid off as they took top positions in the event, held at Commonwealth Games venues across the region.
After the storming success of last year’s pilot event, the games have been split into summer and winter events.
The winter games were staged this week, with 2,000 young athletes going head to head. The summer games will be held in July.
Schools from the 10 boroughs in Greater Manchester competed in sports including hockey, rowing, rugby union, swimming and water polo. Dozens of pupils from Oldham schools represented the borough, many brought back silver and bronze medals, and Diggle School took gold in the girl’s breaststroke, as well as five silver medals and 17 bronzes to come fourth overall
