Mumps relief for beleaguered motorists

Date published: 06 April 2012

SOME relief is on the way for motorists with a major project to transform Mumps roundabout into a road junction to be completed in time for post-Easter rush hours.

Changes to the highway to pave the way for Metrolink have been under way since the middle of March and have involved closing Huddersfield Road at its junction with the former roundabout.

Transport chiefs say the work has been an essential part of introducing the first phase of the new highway arrangement at Mumps in readiness for the new town centre tram line.

They say the route, a major link to the town centre, will reopen before the end of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend and motorists should experience a significant improvement to the previous layout.

And although further work will be required in the area in future, this phase of work is likely to have been the most disruptive element of delivering the new traffic-and-tram highway plan for Mumps.

At the same time, steps have been taken to reopen the Manchester Street roundabout to two lanes. It had been restricted to single-lane traffic since the beginning of March.
