Making sure disabled stay safe as houses
Date published: 13 April 2012
A PIONEERING scheme to provide short breaks for youngsters with disabilities has been launched by a Saddleworth fostering agency.
The project, devised by Safehouses North of Denshaw, will match each youngster with a personal short-break worker who shares similar interests.
A team of specially-recruited workers will have different specialities: one has a knowledge of children with autism; another is an outdoor-pursuits enthusiast. Others have a passion for arts and crafts, or dance and drama. The workers will be regularly monitored and feedback will come direct from the children.
Manager Jan Golden said: “For those with disabilities there are not that many options and we’re hoping to address that balance. These breaks will build confidence and give them meaningful time away from home, as well as helping their families.”
