Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson chews gum, but City boss Roberto Mancini favours a different good-luck charm during a game - fruit pastilles.
Eagle-eyed footy fan Megan Kinghorn (8), of Royton, noticed the manager of her beloved Blues chewing the sugary treats while watching City on TV.
So St Joseph’s pupil Megan decided to send the Italian manager a parcel of the chewy sweets to cheer him up as City looked set to let the title slip from their grasp.
Paying with her own pocket money, Megan sent four packs and a letter to Mancini’s office - and judging from last night’s win, it was just the tonic the manager needed!
City beat West Brom 4-0 to revive the title race with league-leaders Manchester United, who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Wigan.
Megan, a member of City’s Junior Blues supporters club, was delighted to receive a personal response from the grateful team boss.
The letter read: “How surprised and happy I was to receive some fruit pastilles from you. Brian Kidd and I have eaten them all! I have pinned up your beautiful letter on my notice board.”
He sent Megan pictures of himself and the team and said how great it was to have supporters like her.
Megan said: “I kept seeing Mancini eating fruit pastilles. I really like them too, so I thought I’d send him a packet. I was really excited when he replied. I really like him.”
Speaking before last night’s match, Megan’s dad Lee (35) said: “I think it was great of him to reply, and it’s a nice touch to make the letter personal.”
