FOUR Oldham Academy North pupils are celebrating chalking up top marks in their maths GCSEs — TWO years early.

Salima Begun (14) received an A* while Mohammed Ali Ashraf (14), Mohammed Junahid Hussain (13) and Mohammed Kamran Miah (14) all achieved As.

A total of 369 pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 sat their maths exams — normally taken at the age of 16 at the end of Year 11 — in March.

They included 58 Year 9s and proud head teacher Colette Burgess said: “The best universities require a significant number of A*s and As at GCSE when they are scrutinising candidates.

“In terms of the progress and attainment of the students, it puts us in the very top echelons of schools in the country, not just in Oldham.”

The latest passes mean that 18 per cent of Year 9 pupils at Oldham Academy North now have a A* to C grade at maths GCSE, 40 per cent of Year 10s and 61 per cent of Year 11s.

Ms Burgess paid tribute to the school’s outstanding maths staff, adding: “We enter students at the time they are ready to secure good grades. Some students make more progress earlier than others.”
