Deep concern over future of diving clubs

THE future of aquatic clubs at Oldham Sports Centre could be in doubt.
Plans for the rebuilding of Oldham Sports Centre omit a diving pool. The popular groups say they will fight to have a presence in the area when the new centre opens. Hundreds of divers at the five-metre pool have signed an online petition. These include three local sub-aqua clubs, divers, young snorkellers and even canoeists.
Oldham Sub Aqua Club secretary Dave Hackman fears their club could end as a consequence.
He said: “We would not like that to happen, but it is possible. It’s the only one of its kind in the area.”
Oldham’s controversial Leisure Estate Review, which ended earlier this year, announced plans to close four centres — but not until two replacements are built, including Oldham Sports Centre.
The new flagship centre could be built away from the present Lord Street site. Plans include a 25-metre, eight-lane pool and a learner pool.
