100 struggling families battling to save homes
Date published: 11 May 2012
A hundred Oldham households were threatened with repossession in the first three months of 2012, new figures reveal.
Eviction was faced by 12 per cent more people than the same period last year. Oldham’s was the biggest increase in Greater Manchester: the city centre was second with only a one per cent hike.
The figures don’t reveal the actual number of evictions because even after a claim has been made, a person can settle the debt, reach an agreement with the borrower and save their home.
Mortgage lenders must now tell the local authority as soon as action is being taken against any property, so councils can ensure residents get appropriate help.
