COUNCILLOR Howard Sykes has retained his position as local Lib-Dem leader after a unanimous appointment at a meeting yesterday.
Councillor John McCann takes over from Jackie Stanton, who lost her St James seat after 18 years on the council at the May 3 local elections.
Councillor Sykes said: “It is pleasing to get the unanimous support of the group and I am very much looking forward to working even more closely with John.
“I want to also take this opportunity to thank former councillor Jackie Stanton who has been my strong and committed deputy for the last seven years. Her support has been extremely valuable and I am very grateful to her for her contribution.”
Labour’s overall majority increased to 27 with 43 seats, while the Lib-Dems lost seven seats to leave them with 14 and the Tories lost three to leave them with just two seats.
