Do your bit for Olympic spirit
Date published: 22 May 2012
HAVE you got the golden touch when it comes to volunteering? Why not offer to get involved with Oldham’s Olympic festivities?
Oldham Council is looking for willing volunteers to ensure the smooth passage of the Olympic Torch when it travels through the borough on June 24.
Reliable, friendly and enthusiastic are just some of the qualities looked for in volunteers who will help the group of torchbearers, many of whom are members of the local community.
Volunteers will also need to be involved along the route, giving information and help to visitors, hospitality and assisting with event activities.
Councillor Shoab Akhtar, deputy leader of Oldham Council, said: “Ever since it was announced the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay was coming to Oldham there has been a real buzz across the borough.
“I’d like to congratulate all those residents who have been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch because it is an experience which will live with them for the rest of their lives.
“Residents can still get involved and share in this experience by doing their bit and playing a vital part in Oldham’s Olympic legacy by volunteering to help out on June 24.”
The council is also keen to support residents holding street parties to mark the occasion, as long as people submit formal applications.
Event organisers need to submit an event notification form, a short risk assessment, and an event plan. Details of any proposed road closures should also be included. Organisers will be responsible for managing any road closures.
As well as these documents, the council suggests that organisers consider public liability insurance cover for street parties.
Organisers do not need a licence to consume alcohol. However, if alcohol is being sold, you will need to contact Oldham Council’s Licensing Team for a temporary events notice form. This form costs £21 and the team can be contacted on 0161-770 4730/4731.
