Local charities received a welcome boost from Oldham's retiring Mayor.

Richard Knowles, who officially hands over the Mayoral chain to Councillor Olwen Chadderton tomorrow, presented cheques for £8,500 to Promobility, Dr Kershaw's Hospice and Barnardo's Oldham.

Promobility will use the money to buy new motorised scooters while for Dr Kershaw's, the funds will boost the 24-hour care needed for patients.

Barnardo's has put the money towards a new resource library with books, DVDs and toys to help distressed children as well as clothing and meal vouchers for vulnerable youngsters.

As well as the three main charities supported through the Mayor's Appeal, Mr Knowles _ who stood down as a councillor earlier this month _ also donated funds for new gardening facilities at Clarksfield Primary School, St Anne's Primary School, Lydgate and Greenfield St Mary's Primary School to support the town's Bloom and Grow project.

Small donations have also been made to Chernobyl Children's Lifeline, Hawkyard and Whitehead Educational Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Oldham Diabetics Volunteer Support Group and Oldham Hospital League of Friends' Rover Appeal.
