Council could unleash dog control order

DOG owners could face a fine of up to £1,000 if they let their pets off the leash in six of Oldham’s parks.
Oldham Council plans to implement a dog control Order within the borough — and consultation is currently under way until June 8.
The proposed order would have a direct effect on dog owners and dog walkers by restricting access to open areas that they regularly use in Alexandra, Coalshaw Green, Royton, Stoneleigh , Waterhead and Werneth parks.
Caroline Kisko, communications director of the Kennel Club, said: “It is important for as many people as possible to respond to Oldham Council’s consultation to try to ensure the fairest outcome.
“Dog control orders are becoming more common as councils attempt to find ways to control dog fouling and rein in irresponsible dog owners. Unfortunately, this means responsible dog owners are also penalised.
“Restricting exercise to a lead in Oldham’s open spaces has a potentially negative welfare implication which needs to be addressed.”
