A LORRY driver from Oldham has been charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of a police officer hit by his own vehicle as he helped a stranded motorist on a motorway hard shoulder.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has given permission to West Yorkshire Police to charge lorry driver Andrew Abernethy (45), of Rembrandt Walk, Sholver.
PC Mark Goodlad (41) died last October when the Scania lorry hit a BMW X5 police car and a grey Suzuki Swift on the southbound hard shoulder of the M1, near Crigglestone, West Yorkshire.
PC Goodlad was between the two cars,.
Abernethy has been bailed and is due to appear before magistrates in Wakefield next month.
IN another case, a Werneth Man stands trial accused of causing death by dangerous driving.
Vykintas Semezys (21), of Chester Street, pleaded not guilty at Bolton Crown Court, following the death of great-grandfather Alexander Nicolson after the smash in Westhoughton in December.
He was on his way to see a friend about a job and was driving so fast he lost control and ploughed into a vehicle carrying a family heading home after a night out, the court heard.
Mr Nicolson (77) died three days after the crash and his grandaughter Emma Jones, suffered broken bones in her neck.
