Arsonists target Candlelight

ARSON ATTACK: The Candlelight Club, Fountain Street, in Oldham.
OLDHAM’S famous Candlelight Club came close to going up in flames as the landmark building was targeted by arsonists.
Owner Ken Naylor is offering a “substantial” reward for information that leads to the capture of whoever stuffed burning paper into an extractor fan between midnight and 6.30am yesterday. The property’s caretaker discovered smoke-filled rooms and smouldering plastic.
Mr Naylor said: “If it was not for the caretaker, the place could have easily burnt down. I have put almost 50 years of my life into this building.”
The Fountain Street-buillding was home to a famous nightclub until it closed in 2008 and became a private bookings venue.
Police are investigating.
Mr Naylor said: “We have had very little trouble over the years, there have been attempted break-ins, but certainly no arson attempts. I just want to find who has done this, because the fire could have spread to other businesses. I am offering a substantial reward.”
Call Mr Naylor with information: 01706 813403, or the police on the non-emergency number, 101.
