Trumpeting the cause

POLITICIANS have waded into the band contest saga by calling for action to ensure the tradition’s survival.
Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Chris Davies, who lives in Greenfield, is championing a united cross-party front between local politicians to support volunteer organisers.
He says that far from risking a reduction in the size and status of the occasion, more thought should be given to how they could be promoted to a wider audience.
He added: “Local politicians should do all they can to make their work easier, not harder.”
Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams says she has spoken with contest organisers, police and Oldham Council to understand the issues each party has raised.
She added: “I will do everything I can to support the organisers of the concerts. These events are such an important part of the area’s heritage.”
