Death crash blamed on speeding driver

A WITNESS claimed a Werneth driver accused of causing death by dangerous driving was exceeding the speed limit before losing control of his car.
Vykintas Semezys (21), of Chester Street, is on trial at Bolton Crown Court, following the death of great-grandfather Alexander Nicolson (77) after a smash in Westhoughton on December 5 last year. He was on his way to see a friend about a job when he ploughed into a vehicle carrying a family heading home from a night playing bingo, the court heard.
Clifford Hicton, who saw the crash near the Watergate Island roundabout in Over Hulton, told the court: “It was the speed that drew my attention to the Renault Laguna. I would say it was going at about 50mph or 60mph. He lost control and came on to the wrong side of the road and had a collision with a C3 Picasso.
“To me it was like the vehicle had veered off because it had gone too fast. There was no skidding out of control, but the bend was taken far too wide and too fast.”
