Borough is road repairs blackspot

OLDHAM’s roads are among the worst-maintained in the country.
New statistics show 14 per cent of the borough’s main roads need maintenance — the third-highest figure in the country.
The figures, based on responses from 89 councils, showed only roads in the London boroughs of Camden (17 per cent) and Haringey (20 per cent) to be in greater need of repair.
Forty per cent of responing councils reported deterioration in main road conditions, 38 per cent claimed no change and 21 per cent reported improved conditions during 2010-11.
The news prompted the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) to call for more to be done to ease the situation and bring Britain’s roads up to scratch.
Director of policy and research Neil Greig said: “Under the previous Government local authorities had targets to improve the condition of their roads. While the old system of road maintenance targets wasn’t perfect, the effect of the coalition scrapping these targets is evident in certain areas.”
