Long to rain over us!

PROUD Oldhamers defied the unmerciful British weather to wave their flags for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Problems were caused as rain and strong winds conditions swept across the borough — but most organisers still said the “party must go on”.

Last-minute decisions left street parties either moved indoors, postponed or cancelled. Though wind-battered bunting was a common sight during yesterday’s events, it failed to dampen some events celebrating the Queen’s 60-year reign.

Neighbours still showed their support for Kathy Ingham’s street party in Chadderton, which aimed to raise money for two charities. Kathy, of Leslie Avenue, said: “People in the community have still come in their drips and drabs.

“You have got to make the most of the occasion and we was not going to cancel because of the weather.”

More than a hundred partygoers crammed into Lees Library after a “contingency plan” was put into place by Lees Community Association (LCA) and for their street party.

Oldham Lions Club’s party on Sholver Green lost part of it’s bite after a planned fairground failed to turn up because of the weather - but celebrations continued into the nearby Northgate Inn.

A planned party on Cornwall Crescent in Diggle was washed out and a prize-winning street party in Failsworth was postponed until today (Monday) due to a water logged field.

Saturday kicked off the jubilee celebrations in style with a host of fun-filled parties which included Gallery Oldham’s street party, which also celebrated their own 10th anniversary.

Organisers saw great success at Fitton Hill’s Wildbrook Crescent Community Project and a huge Contour Housing arranged fun day on Limeside Park.

A Party in the Park marked Chadderton’s Coalshaw Green Park’s centenary, which also saw the annual fundraising walk between Green Flag parks in aid of Help for Heroes.
