Beacons light up the night sky
Date published: 06 June 2012
FLAMES roared high and proud across Oldham to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Beacons were lit at six locations across the borough at late-night ceremonies on Monday.
These formed a network of more than 4,000 beacons lit by communities across the UK and Commonwealth at the same time to mark the monarch’s 60 years on the throne.
Each beacon was sited in a prominent location so that they could be seen from as far a distance as possible.
Mike Lawson, secretary of Chadderton Historical Society who was at Chadderton Heights, said: “It’s very important to be part of an event like this.
“You could see flickers of light in the distance at other places across Oldham and North Manchester.
“It was a lovely event and we sang the national anthem when the beacon was lit.”
Beacons were also lit at Moorside Cricket Club, St John’s Church, in Failsworth, Victoria Memorial Park, St Thomas’s Church, in Oldham and Pots and Pans at Saddleworth.
