JUBILEE glee . . . Andrew Pheby and Elizabeth Pizarro with little Lily
Jubilant Andrew’s diamond delivery
THE Jubilee weekend saw no celebrations happier than those of an Oldham couple who came out of the weekend with a new baby — delivered by dad!
Quick-thinking Andrew Pheby (28) had to spring into action when partner Elizabeth Pizarro (25) suddenly went into labour. He delivered his daughter and calmly freed the umbilical cord – which was dangerously wrapped around little Lily’s neck.
Elizabeth’s due date was June 5 - that of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee - so Andrew and Elizabeth knew the birth would be a memorable one. But when the pair settled into bed on the evening of June 4, they didn’t know the drama was about to unfolrd early
Elizabeth started feeling pains around midnight and tried to relax. But then the birth started. The couple had planned a home birth - with the help of a midwife. But as time ran out, Andrew had to step up.
“It was all really fast,’ he said. “I laid Elizabeth on the floor and tried to calm her but she just kept saying she needed to push and that was it, out came the baby. It was fantastic!”
Andrew, who works at Saddleworth School, said: “I was concerned about keeping the baby safe, keeping my girlfriend calm and making sure nothing was going wrong. It was an amazing experience.”
Elizabeth said: “We didn’t get any time to think about what was going on. Andrew is always really good in a crisis.”
