BUN fight: Ann Hilton with the dumped bread
A phantom bread dumper is leaving bemused Ann Hilton without a crumb of comfort after tipping a mountain of loaves and rolls on grass opposite her home every day.
A fresh batch has been dumped every night for around four weeks in the spot opposite her house in Watts Street - and is attracting hundreds of birds.
The houseproud 74 year old cleaned up yesterday morning’s bread herself in desperation. And there was enoug to fill a wheelie bin.
She said: “They are just dumping this bread. There’s tons of it. There’s big loaves, small loaves, rolls, nutty bread — every kind of bread possible! Every day they come. I wish I knew why someone would dump bread on a lovely rose garden like this. I have never seen them doing it in the morning and I am up about half-past four.”
Ann believes a truck is being used to cart the bread after finding a tyre track in the grass.
She is worried that it is attracting vermin and flocks of birds.
“I am all for feeding birds, but there’s hundreds of them when they come,” added Ann.
Councillor Steven Bashforth, Oldham Council’s deputy cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “Enforcement officers are investigating. We have spoken to many residents and local businesses in an effort to discover what is taking place. This is a very anti-social act and we do our utmost to bring those responsible to account.”
