First academy handed over
Date published: 19 June 2012
OASIS Academy is to be handed over to Oldham Council today to mark a major milestone for education in the borough.
The first of three state-of the-art new academy buildings in Oldham’s £70 million academies programme, construction of the £25.5 million Hollins Road building started in September, 2010. Pupils will start to use the buildings from September.
The 1,500-pupil school is currently using the buildings of the two schools it replaced in 2010 — South Chadderton and Kaskenmoor.
The building is on the site of the former Brook Mill, with playing fields located on the old Oak Colliery site. Sports amenities that will be open to community users, as well as pupils and staff, include a floodlit 3G all-weather pitch, outdoor running track, fitness studio, skatepark and sports pavilion with spectator seating.
The Oldham Academies programme also includes the new Waterhead Academy at Orb Mill, which replaced the former Counthill and Breeze Hill schools; and The Oldham Academy North, on the current site of Newman RC College, Royton that replaced the former Grange School.
