DIAMOND dazzler . . . the flower display and huge glass diamond form the centrepiece of Oldham’s North-West in Bloom entry
In Bloom centrepiece is like a real dazzler
A DAZZLING diamond has been unveiled as the centrepiece for Oldham’s North-West in Bloom entry.
The grand flower display in Oldham town centre features the huge diamond, made from 16 mirror panels.
The showpiece is both in tribute to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and honours London 2012 by using the colours of the Olympic flag to reflect the diverse and vibrant nature of the borough.
It will be viewed by thousands over the weekend as the Olympic torch passes through on Sunday.
A key part of Oldham’s Bloom and Grow project, the display is at Market Place opposite Spindles Shopping Centre.
The bed made up of 4,800 flowers, which took 120 hours to grow and place.
An official unveiling this morning saw councillors and council staff from the Park’s Service, who built the display, show off their work.
The bed will stay on show throughout the summer, then the council’s Environmental Services intend to reuse the display elsewhere in the town.
Bloom and Grow is the Borough’s 2012 entry for North-West in Bloom and — for the first time ever — the national Britain in Bloom contest.
Over recent years Oldham has enjoyed great success in the North-West in Bloom competition winning Best Town Centre in 2009, Best City in 2010 and Best City Gold Award in 2011.
