People’s carnival postponed

Organisers have called off this weekend’s Oldham “People’s” Carnival - due to recent downpours and the likelihood of more heavy rain during the event.

The carnival parade was to have been the starting point for a whole weekend of early-summer entertainment — the two carnival days would have run alongside celebrations for Sunday’s passage through Oldham of the Olympic torch.

While the nationally-organised torch procession will go ahead, the carnival — a parade on Saturday and park events on Sunday - has been postponed to August 18 and 19, with the same line-up of attractions.

Carnival event director Paul Davies said: “We came down to the park this morning and had to make a decision because we had people about to arrive to set up.

“Even if the weather had cleared up the ground would still be very wet from all the rain we have had, and vehicles would have churned it up.

“It’s very disappointing to have to cancel at this stage - but we already had contingency plans in place for the alternative weekend.”
