Explosion blasts Shaw

A LARGE explosion in Shaw has demolished several houses.
One man dragged from the wreckage with 80 per cent burns has been airlifted to Wythenshawe Hospital after a huge fireball erupted in Buckley Street.
Doors and windows in many other homes were smashed by the explosion at around 11.15am this morning.
Police, ambulance and fire services rushed to the scene to begin a search and rescue operation. Several streets were evacuated and cordoned off.
Ambulances were on the scene within three minutes. A spokesperson said: “We have sent our hazardous area response team. We are still assessing the scene and working closely with other emergency services.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
Residents reported smelling gas before the explosion, but so far no confirmation has been received.
It was later confirmed that at least one person has died in the incident.
