OLDHAM SPORTS AWARDS 2012
ALL that is great about sport in the borough is set to be celebrated with the new-look One Future Oldham Sports Awards, 2012.

Oldham’s Sports Development team has presented sports awards for some years but they were looking to mark the arrival of the Olympic Games in this country by making the 2012 awards extra special.

And with the help of the Oldham Business Leadership Group and the Oldham Evening Chronicle a steering group of top local business executives was established to make that dream a reality.

Thanks to generous sponorship from many North-West organisations — led by The Stoller Charitable Trust, Oldham Council and the Manchester United Foundation — over 400 people will sit down to a gala dinner at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Friday to see awards presented in nine categories.

Nominations came flooding in for sports achiever, disabled sports achiever, young volunteer and volunteer, unsung hero, contribution to school sport, a physical activity award and the prestige coach of the year and club of the year awards.

From those hundreds of nominations an independent panel then had the difficult task of coming up with three finalists in each category.

Each will get the red-carpet treatment as they receive their acclaim and one in each section will carry off the award.

In most of the categories, the winner goes forward to represent Oldham at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards held later in the year.

Neil Consterdine, head of Oldham’s Integrated Youth Service. said: “Oldham should be very proud that it is able to put on an event of this stature for sport and with the Business Awards and the Pride in Oldham Awards we are able to celebrate the best Oldham has to offer right across the spectrum.”
