‘I think we are in a state of shock’

DEVASTATED families attempted to find solace in the refuge centre at Crompton House School.

School pupils entertained temporarily homeless children and staff worked long hours to comfort those affected by the blast.

Andy Tushinghan and Nadine McHugh, who live yards from the scene with their 20 month old son and three year old daughter, were one of the families who used the centre.

Andy (37) said at the scene: “We thought we better come down here to say we are all right.

“I think we are in a state of shock. We were in the living room and we thought a large truck was going through the house. The back door came off its hinges and we just grabbed the kids, ran out of the back and I kicked a fence down so we could get away.”
