Council vows help to rebuild lives

‘Everyone has pulled together in a fantastic community effort’
OLDHAM Council has promised help for as long as it takes to help the community in Shaw recover from the explosion.

Emergency plans swung into action in the wake of the blast, with a rest centre set up at Crompton House School providing help for people unable to get into their homes.

It assisted around 80 people from 40 families.

All people requiring temporary accommodation were housed in partnership with First Choice Homes Oldham (FCHO), while others stayed with friends or family or in bed and breakfast accommodation.

Councillor Jean Stretton, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and devolved services, said: “This is absolutely tragic news that has shocked the whole community. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. You don’t have to have known any of the people involved to feel stunned and saddened by the day’s events and they are all in our thoughts.”

She added that the council has “stringent” contingency plans in place for when a disaster strikes of this nature.

“We will commit whatever resources are needed in order to assist the emergency services and the clean-up operation when it begins. The events have touched everybody and their response has been truly inspirational.”

Oldham Council leader Councillor Jim McMahon said: “I promise that we are here to help — not just for today — but for as long as it takes to help people rebuild their lives. It's often the case that the worst tragedy brings out the best in people and we have seen that.”

Residents affected who need more information can ring the council’s contact centre on 0161-770 7770 or visit www.oldham.gov.uk.

Road closures are still in place as emergency services investigate the scene. Rochdale Road is closed in both directions at the Duke Street junction.

Salt Street at Crompton Way (A663), Oak Street at Duke Street and Buckley Street at Gorton Street are also affected as we went to press.
