Distress fund launched

OLDHAM Council is launching an official Distress Fund for all those affected by the Shaw explosion.
Councillor Jean Stretton said: “We’ve been inundated with offers of assistance to the people affected in Shaw. Funds will contribute towards relieving the distress and suffering they are experiencing. It will also provide short-term financial support to those awaiting payment of insurance claims, and support those without cover.
“The hardship is shocking — not just financial, but also emotional. In addition to the official Distress Fund and the significant donations of clothing, food and other items, council officers are also now offering interest-free loans to residents facing immediate hardship.
Donate directly to the Oldham Distress Fund on the Internet at www.oldham.gov.uk, or ring 0161 770 6611.
Debenhams Oldham is also taking personal donations atits tills to pass on to officials, and has established a drop-off point for donations of clothing and other items (though not food).
ST James Church in Shaw is to open for prayers and the signing of a book of condolence for two-year-old Jamie Heaton.
The church is open today and tomorrow from 11am to 2pm and 6 to 7pm, and on Monday from 11am to 2pm.
Rev Lynne Connolly said: “The prayers of all the churches and centres of worship in Shaw are with the bereaved family and all those who have been affected by this tragedy.”
Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, paid tribute to the emergency services at Prime Minister's question time.
She said: “I am sure the whole House will join me in mourning the death of Jamie Heaton and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time,” she said..
