FAMILIES are still wondering when they can collect their belongings and see what devastation has been caused to their homes.

Residents were called to an update meeting at Crompton House School yesterday afternoon, but some of those affected are still unsure what lies ahead.

Alison Cooney, whose daughter and three-year-old grand-daughter live in Chancery Lane only yards away from the blast, said: “We haven’t a clue when they can go back into the house.”

Alison, of Chamber Road, Shaw, has given temporary shelter to her stricken family.

Janet Ward, who lives yards from the collapsed homes, said she and her teenage daughter are waiting for news and believes it could be a week before they can return.

“The police have told us it’s a crime scene, and they are also seeing if the houses are safe to go back into. We were in our pyjamas when we left; we don’t have any of our clothes or belongings.”

Crompton House School has been a shelter since Tuesday evening and is a central point of contact between residents and the council.

Councillor Jean Stretton said: “People have been asked to bring their keys here (to the school), so the people who are inspecting the properties can get in. We’ve got a number of people still assessing the safety of the properties. Nobody will be allowed in until it’s safe.”

One resident told the Chronicle the explosion had caused all the nearby houses to list. It is believed structural engineers will see if any will need to be demolished.

Affected residents who haven’t yet registered details with the council are being urged to do so at the school or on the helpline, 0161 770 7700.

Emergency financial assistance, health services and benefits advisors are being drafted in. Emergency clothing, toiletries and other supplies are available at the school.
