Salmon could soon be on rise in our rivers
Date published: 06 July 2012
RESIDENTS could soon be seeing salmon swimming through the River Beal.
A major sewer-improvement plan to clean up the river through Oldham and Shaw, is part of a £50million programme to upgrade Rochdale’s drainage system.
When complete, the drains will be able to carry a greater volume of water and rubbish will be strained out if it is forced to overflow into the river.
Engineers displayed the plans at an exhibition in a mobile visitor centre at Shaw Road, Newhey.
Work is set to start on Shaw Road, at the junction with Gordon Street and is expected to take eight weeks. It will involve temporary traffic lights on Shaw Road and some parking restrictions.
The sewer improvement scheme in Rochdale is part of United Utilities’ £3.6 billion investment programme between 2010 and 2015.
