Colin’s got a mountain to climb

A former soldier from Saddleworth is set to climb five mountains in a gruelling charity challenge.

Colin Henshaw, a former member of the Royal Fusiliers in Northern Ireland, is hoping to complete the Five Peaks Challenge in under 55 hours to raise money for injured soldiers struggling to settle into normal life.

The ex-serviceman headed off to Wales yesterday to start his attempt with Mount Snowdon and Scafell Pike before taking on Ben Nevis today and then travelling to Ireland to climb Slieve Donard and Carran Tuohill.

Colin found his own return to normal life after the service the same struggle he hopes to help by raising money. Nothing helped until he was put in touch with former soldiers in the same position, who offer each other mutual support.

With their help, Colin is now able to take on the challenge.

He said: “It’s taken me two years to get to where I am now. I’m fit enough to get involved so that’s what I want to do.”

After this event he hopes to walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall in August, before completing a ‘Spire to Spire’ challenge from Winchester Cathedral to Salisbury Cathedral in September.
