Record fine imposed on fly-tipper

A MAN has had a record fine imposed for fly-tipping after starting to build a bonfire on playing fields.

Jamie Lord (24), of Norman Street, Failsworth, admitted the offence and was fined £3,600 — the highest ever in Oldham — with £2,231 in costs.

He had built up the pile late last October to use for an unauthorised bonfire on council-owned playing fields on Keb Lane, Bardsley.

He is one of several people prosecuted by Oldham Council for littering and fly-tipping waste with the offences all taking place over a three month period in late 2011.

The others included:

Robert Kilroy (20), of Gouldborn House, Shaw, who dropped a takeaway tray in Oldham town centre — £200 with £300 costs.

Ion Lefter (30), of Brook Lane, Glodwick, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping and having no waste-carrier licence — £350 with £100 costs.

Stacey Roland (23), Bar Gap Road, Oldham Edge, was smoking in a smoke-free part of Oldham bus station. She didn;t pay a fixed-penalty notice — fined £200 with £160 costs.

Jason Farrell (47), of Raleigh Close, Coldhurst, failed to pay a penalty notice for dropping a digarette end in Oldham town centre — fined £100 plus £95 costs.

Philip Sheppard (28), of Derby Street, Chadderton, paid an unknown person to remove rubbish without checking if the person as licensed. The waste was later found tipped —after pleading guilty he was conditionally discharged for 12 months and told to pay £300 costs.

Jason Barton (31), of Wastwater Street, Oldham, was found transporting waste without a carriers licence — conditionally discharged for 18 months with £500 costs.
